Spookiness

 Memes - stuff about me

Faith tagged me with telling a ghost story so I am obliging.

A few years ago, we had our company party at the Hotel Del. (For those of you not familiar, the Hotel Del is an old Victorian hotel in Coronado.) My date and I got a room there and hosted a cool pre/during/after party. We were in the old part of the hotel in this weird section where there were only two rooms. It was cool though because past our walk-in closet, there was like a dressing room with a chest of drawers and a huge mirror which we used as the bar. In any case, we were all trashed and ordered room service and the person who delivered our room service told us that the haunted room was just down the hallway and around the corner. So we go down the hallway and there is a single white rose that is strewn across the floor. Weird. We go down to where the room was and nothing going on, so we ended up back in our room and eventually everyone left and we went to bed.

So I am pretty plastered and I was trying to sleep and I had this dream about some chick, dressed in a black Victorian dress and she was asking me if I wanted to hear her story. I told her that I didn’t and I just wanted to go to sleep, but she kept showing up in my dreams all night. I didn’t think anything of it until the next day when we were in the gift shop looking at a book about the hotel and one of the ghosts that were supposed to haunt it. The depiction of the ghost in the book was eerily similar to the woman in my dream – a woman wearing a black Victorian dress. And her story? She was meeting her lover at the hotel. But he never showed up. They ended up finding her body near on the beach. So yeah. A ghost in my dreams. Pretty spooky.

Oh and I guess we are supposed to explain what happened logically? Alcohol + over-active imagination = ghost in your dream.

3 Years of the Rawk: Day Six

Blogiversary    Memes - stuff about me    Rawk Tunes

I did this meme about my current six a couple of years ago.

Here’s what it looks like today:

The Faint - Southern Belles in London Sing
I’ve been on a Faint kick for about three weeks now with no end in sight.

Dean and Britta - Singer Sing
I get happy every time I hear this.

Paramore - Hallelujah
I’m all about the chick fronted pop punk.

White Stripes - Conquest
This is such a great song. It’s a cover and there is some serious mariachi music going on with it.

Illinois - Bad Day
This is just fun.

Straylight Run - Existentialism on Prom Night
I’m on a huge Straylight Run kick since seeing them a few weeks ago. This is the song that started it all.

P.S Bonus track in the listen section...still on my Menomena high from the show in Dallas last week.
P.P.S. Songs from the original post, yo.
P.P.S. Halfway through...any suggestions for what to post for the next few days????

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Yes, one of my best friends had a baby in August.

4. Did anyone close to you die? No.

5. What countries did you visit? No foreign travel, but I was all over domestically.

rawk on »

6. What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006? A Smashing Pumpkins show.

7. What dates from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? 11/11. Easy to remember, very cool night.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Visiting with Patrick without having a meltdown.

9. What was your biggest failure? Not heading back to the gym like I promised myself I would.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Nothing beyond the normal cough cough here and there.

11. What was the best thing you bought? I'm really liking my new yakpak razor purse.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration? I'm saying me because I'm usually a head case and I've been pretty good this year.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? I can't say that there was anyone that did that to me this year.

14. Where did most of your money go? Same as last year - shoes, shows, and cds.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Seeing Patrick. Going to Maui.

16. What song will always remind you of 2006? That's tough. I have been living with the 60 odd songs on my Super Fantastic Mix for a long time. I can at least narrow it down to three: The Hold Steady - Chips Ahoy!, The Lashes - Please Please Please, and Johnny Cash - If You Could Read My Mind.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? happier
b) thinner or fatter? I'll say fatter, but it's probably a push. DAMN IT!
c) richer or poorer? richer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Relaxing. It seems like I never get a day off.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of? I seriously need to lay off the jager.

20. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?
I have no idea yet. I guess it depends on how the next two weeks shake out.

21. Did you fall in love in 2006? I don't think so.

22. How many one-night stands? I was only with one person the entire year. Such an adult I was.

23. What was your favorite TV program? Gilmore Girls

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Absolutely not.

25. What was the best book you read? generation x by douglas coupland

26. What was your greatest musical discovery? Silversun Pickups, La Rocca (Dangerbird records represent! I wanted to type reprazent but that's so not me.)

27. What did you want and get? Laid, thank god!

28. What did you want and not get? A clear view on the top of Haleakala

29. What was your favorite film of this year? The Departed. Please give Mr. Scorcese his Oscar now.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? My birthday is in two weeks. I will be 34.

31.What one thing made your year measurably more satisfying? being able to travel all over the country.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006? black is the new black.

33. What kept you sane? Therapy.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Brangelina

35. What political issue stirred you the most? The mid-term elections and the potential for more voter fraud

36. Who did you miss? Usually, Patrick would be the answer here. But I saw him this summer and we're closer than ever (except for that pesky he lives in Norway issue.)

37. Who was the best new person you met? That would have to be my local music bloggers in crime - Cat Dirt and Rosey. Oh and Ben Lashes. Damn I love me some Ben Lashes.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006. When there is bad weather coming, get the hell out of the midwest sooner rather than later.

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

This is hard. First I thought some Silversun Pickups....Kissing Families:

well someone said i made a mistake
kept looking forward on paths sideways
it's everything that is connected and beautiful
and now i know just where i stand
seasons always shift too late
spent too much time now on paths sideways
everything that is connected and beautiful
and now i know just where i stand
thank god it's over....

and then some Taking Back Sunday...Divine Intervention....

Yeah, we're stubborn and melodramatic,
A real class act.
You see, I know a few of your favorite things.
Five in the morning and all comes out pouring,
Love, out the same way in.

Something real, make it timeless,
An act of God and nothing less will be accepted.
Now if you're calling me out,
Then count me out.

The SSPU lyrics are more philosophical and the TBS lyrics are more like a few situations I dealt with this year. But I guess if I really had to think about lyrics that sum up the year, it would be some Rise Against...Give It All...

Breathe (breathe), the air we give (give), the life we live (live),
Our voices racing distances (breathe),
So wet my tongue (give), break into song (live),
through seas of competition

So please believe your eyes, a sacrifice,
It's not what we had in our minds,
I'm coming home tonight, home tonight

We give it all, this is the reason why I sing,
So give it all, and it's these reasons that belong to me

Today I offer all myself to this, I'm living for my dying wish,
I give it all, now there's a reason, there's a reason, to give it all.

Back Talk

Christy:

ugh, I agree about Pandora. Major suck. Sometimes I’ll listen to Last FM if I’m in the mood for a certain style or genre. They do an okay job, though not super awesome.

[go]

roger:

How did that translate into the rest of the day?

[go]

Cristy Westfall:

Dear Chick Rawker,
Thank you for taking our survey.  The purpose of these surveys are two-fold.....to find out what ALL listeners think about the music we play, along with songs that we think listeners might be interested in hearing on our station.  The songs on the list below are not necessarily in rotation on our radio station.  We have a lot of fun here and sometimes we have specialty weekends and features that songs on this list might or might not fit into.  I hope that you continue to take our surveys and give us your opinion because it helps us program our station to give listeners what they want.

Yes alternative music crosses over to the pop world, it always has and always will.  I think it’s great when an artist or group reaches this level.  They release there music and are labeled “Alternative” and then they become “Popular” and the masses want to hear them.  If managed correctly this will allow them to create and be more artistic with their music in the future.  For example NIN....yes “Closer” is a “Popular” song, but without it, would Trent Reznor have been able to create and work on the many projects he has that appeal to a “Music Connoisseur” like yourself?  We don’t know for sure but we can guess the answer is “Yes.”

There is a purpose and place for POP Music.  I hope that from now on you take this into consideration when you listen to and judge the formats that this type of music is featured on.

Thank you,
Cristy Westfall

awesome letter * i really liked listening to him.  I may as well shoot my radio now * really great letter, seriously!

@karmiclife:

These are the same things I have been thinking about for awhile now, starting when Chris left. Radio is still relevant and will be for a while. The other competition aside from online is satalitte radio. Many people listen through Sirius and XFM. It is all splintered. Partnerships, collaboration, engaging with fans are the way to go and survive. Hard core music fans like most of our crowd may end up left to scrounge for the good stuff. But really, is that so new?

[go]

hilary:

so sweet, lyn.

[go]

roger:

Word. I’d have to use different examples, but would say everything else exactly the same.

Old times, new times, good times.

Love these, especially the pre-dawn shot. That must have been an awesome experience.
