Grand Ole Party featured in RAGGED
Grand Ole Party is the little band that could these days. I do love to see them covered in national print - their latest interview is in the current issue of RAGGED. It’s good to see that the interview has quotes from all the band members - too often it is easy to focus on just Kristin.
As you may be able to tell by the cover, Kate Nash is also featured in this issue. I like that Filter and Ragged are not afraid to go a little pop with their choices of interviewees. There are also interviews with up and coming L.A. bands Gran Role and Monte Negro, plus a chat with Dustin Kensrue of Thrice and a cool look at the Switches Matt and Ollie’s favorite records.
So, are you wondering what all these bands sound like? (You are nodding your head yes.) Filter has hooked up a prize pack of cds from the featured artists. One lucky winner will get copies of Grand Ole Party’s Humanimals, Kate Nash’s Made of Bricks, Monte Negro’s Who Told You?, Gran Ronde’s Secret Rooms, Thrice’s The Alchemy Index Vols. III and IV, and the Switches’ Lay Down The Law plus the latest issue of RAGGED.
If you’re interested in the schwag, send me an email (contact info on the right) with your name, mailing address and why you should win. I’ll pick a winner on Thursday and let you know if you won on Friday.

Release of the week: Eels
Quiet on the new release front except for the new Eels. Well, okay it’s not really *new* Eels...I know, you’re thinking, “The Eels. Should I know who they are?” Well if you listened to the radio anytime in 1996 or 1997, you surely heard “Novocaine for the Soul”. (I still like that song.) And if you read my blog back in 2005, I was somewhat obsessed with the song “old shit/new shit” for awhile. So let’s get into the deets..
Meet The EELS: Essential EELS Vol. 1, 1996-2006
24 tracks spanning a decade of tunes from the artist known as “E” and his revolving cast of bandmates.
EELS Useless Trinkets: B-Sides, Soundtracks, Rarities and Unreleased 1996-2006.
Useless Trinkets is a must-have collection of 50 hard-to-find B-sides, film contributions and unreleased tracks, and a DVD of live performance footage from Lollapalooza 2006.
Both albums have been digitally remastered and are accompanied by notes from E and full-color booklets.
Sounds awesome, right? Well, good, because I am giving a copy of each away, courtesy of the cool peeps at Filter. Hit me back in comments or email me if you want ‘em. I’ll give you until Thursday for good measure.

Great Northern Show and Schwag
Our friends at Eenie Meenie have been nice enough to hook us up with a pair of tix to the Great Northern/Comas show on Thursday at the Belly Up. They are also throwing in a lovely prize pack including:
- a copy of Great Northern’s excellent cd “Trading Twilight for Daylight”
- a copy of the Coma’s cd
- your choice of a Great Northern or Vagrant tee
- a super cool button pack designed by the band
I guess I could come up with some cheesy trivia to answer, but I’m so not like that. If you want the tix and the schwag, email me or leave a comment and I will choose a winner on Wednesday. Even if you don’t win, you should plan to go see the show. It’s only $6 (sponsored by KBZT’s About The Music) and promises to be a good time.
P.S. Rosey is giving a pair of tix away too. We’re kinda like the official blog sponsors. Woo hoo.

Your Plans for Friday Night
This is where you should be on Friday Night…
So, yes, Dialed in Rosey and I are co-presenting the Great Northern record release party at the Beauty Bar in conjunction with Feel The Noise. What this means for you is that I have a prize pack to give away…

Whoever submits the most interesting recipe wins the prize pack and I will buy the winner and their plus one a round of the winning concoction at the Beauty Bar that evening. Free Schwag for You: from Filter and The Colour
It still surprises me when I get email from people doing promo for their bands and what have you. These are the kind of people in the industry that “get it”, who know that people read blogs to find new music and are doing their part to be part of the blogosphere instead of dismissing it as irrelevant. I think some people are of the opinion that print media is becoming irrelevant as blogs are more accessible and timely, but there are still some rags that are worth reading and Filter Magazine is one of them. So I was pretty stoked to get an email from someone at Filter, offering a prize pack to give away. Awesome.
The setup:
Filter has teamed up with the clothing company American Rag to launch Issue #2 of RAGGED. This thirty-two page special edition magazine features stories on indie rock and alternative music from major and up-and-coming artists. Artists featured in RAGGED Issue #2 include Aqualung, Robbers On High Street, Midnight Movies, The Colour, Miho Hatori, Carina Round, and The Cinematics.
Why I Am In:
You may remember I went to an awesome show in Dallas, where I was completely won over by The Colour and their electric live performance. Their album “Between Earth and Sky” has been a favorite of mine as well.
The schwag (courtesy of the cool folks at Filter/Ragged):
RAGGED - The Colour Prize Pack
- American Rag Cie RAGGED hoodie
- copy of RAGGED magazine
- The Colour LP “Between Earth & Sky”
The Deets:
I guess I could come up with some sort of trivia or what have you, but whatevs. If you want the schwag, email me or leave me a comment and I’ll figure out some random way to pick a winner.
In any case, you should go and check out Ragged Mag online. And The Colour will be in town next week on 5/31 at the Epicentre. I know, not a great place to see a show, but if you’re inclined to go see this band, you’ll have a good time, just get a drink at Tio Leo’s around the corner first.
P.S. And, yes, bonus tune in the listen section. They nail this live.
