Stream the new NIN
You can stream the forthcoming NIN album, Year Zero, here. Oh, and did you notice the Art Is Resistance button over yonder? I’m so into all of this stuff that was done for the release of the album. It’s been cool to see the sites pop up over the past couple of months. The creepiest one of the sites I think is Secure Broadcast Informatics. This one was discovered in the packaging of the Beside You In Time dvd.
Oh, and the new album? Pretty good. Sober Trent is amazing.

Ya Think?
"A penchant for Hello Kitty and Minnie Mouse.”
So saith SD City Beat in the feature on music blogs this week. I did give a great quote:
“The radio posts came out of a probably unhealthy fascination with commercial alt-rock radio.”
Absolutely unhealthy. Do you know how long it takes to write that playlist post every week? In any case, it’s cool to be mentioned, especially alongside the other cool bloggers I know (that means you Cat Dirt and Rosey.)
P.S. Bonus in the listen section is Kevin Barnes from Of Montreal. He recently stopped by Good Records in Dallas and there is great recording of it floating around. Enjoy!

Change of Plans?
Damn it. Today, it was announced that the Smashing Pumpkins will be headlining the Virgin US Festival in B-More MD. On the same weekend as Lollapalooza. Damn it. (I said that already.) I was planning on going to Lollapalooza and there is still an outside chance that they would play Lollapalooza on Friday and do the VirginFest on Saturday. I’m telling myself I shouldn’t be conflicted and just go to Lollapalooza. Because that was the plan. Any opinions out there? Anyone?

The Buzz in the Air
Ah, I actually got a on a real plane for once. I usually fly on a sucky S80 out of SD, but my connecting flight to Orlando was on a 757. Which means in flight entertainment! They have these pre-programmed radio stations and I love to check them out. So….here is what is on their “modern rock” station, called the Buzz. (My commentary is sprinkled throughout in italics.)
Priestess – Talk To Her
Nice way to start a set of music. Rawk rawk.
Saliva – Ladies and Gentlemen
This is one of those crappy Papa Roach sounding bands.
Born Ruffians – Hedonistic Me
The Little Ones – High on A Hill
Cut Chemist - The Audience Is Listening Theme Song
I had never heard any of the previous three songs. Total indie love here.
Peaches – Do Ya
Every once in a while, a Peaches song fits right in.
Prophet Omega – Dear Satellite
The Whitest Boy Alive – Golden Cage
What a great name for a band!
Pilot Speed – Into Your Hideout
The Shins – New Slang
Some old school Shins love.
The Gothic Archies – Freakshow (from the Carnivorous Carnival)
The Mars Volta – Vermicide
Ouch. This band still grates on my nerves.
Muse – Starlight
Gotta have Muse on here. They were actually the spotlight band in the music guide.
Remy Zero – Fair
This band has always reminded me of U2.
The Streets – Too Late
Chromeo – Way Too Much
Maximo Park – Limasol
This was a fun three song block.
The Mooney Suzuki – I Say I Love You
The voice over pointed out that you may know this band from “School of Rock”. Really? I had no idea that they wrote that song.
The Black Keys – Give Your Heart Away
The Black Keys – Your Touch
Two Black Keys songs! Right on.
Rodrigo y Gabriela – Diablo Rojo
This song seemed out of place after the Black Keys.
Gang of Four – Natural’s Not In It
This totally surprised me.
Lady Sovereign – Public Warning
Not a good transition to the next song.
Serena-Maneesh – Chorale Luck
Norway buzz band, opening for NIN on the Japanese tour.
The Raconteurs – Level
Anything off this album would be good.
Trail of Dead – Porpoise Song
That’s what I am talking about.
Subtle – Midas Cruz
Teddybears – Different Sound
Pepper – Your Face
Yuck.
H.I.M. – Killing Loneliness
Scissor Sisters – Laura
Dance, dance in your tiny airline seat.
Favourite Sons – Hang On, Girl
King Biscuit Time – I Walk The Earth
Grizzly Bear – Easier
The Company – Always Look On The Bright Side of Life
All in all, a pretty good mix. Maybe I’ll review another station on the way home.
Okay, off to dinner. I have to go down to the cocktail party to schmooze and then I think my partner in crime has his heart set on a drink at HOB tonight. Though we can’t get too crazy because tomorrow he is presenting a session and I am his subject matter expert. But knowing us, I’m sure we’ll be able to sneak some craziness in. Damn southern men. Haha.
Stuff I Missed
I am on my way to the airport yet again (this time Orlando) but there were a couple of things I needed to mention before heading out.
- I can’t believe I forgot to mention El-P’s new album I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead in my new releases post. If you’re a ninnie like myself, you know that “Flyentology” features none other than Trent. Woo hoo. If you haven’t heard it yet, check out the Cassettes Won’t Listen remix here.
- You fans of internet radio need to check out Slacker. I haven’t really taken it for a spin, so if you guys check it out, let me know what you think. Pay special attention to the indie rock station as a former radio host has his hands in it…
Okay, that’s it. Sporadic updates from Orlando....I’ll be at a conference and there is sure to be some drinking involved, especially with this Southern Dude that I know. I’ll try to get a good picture of Minnie while I am gone. Peace out kids....

In Store at Good Records
There’s a lot going on music wise in Dallas this weekend. As a warm-up to South by Southwest, they are putting on North By Southwest. It’s a four day festival in Deep Ellum in a venue that I have yet to check out. I may not actually go see any bands at the festival itself but there is a lot of other stuff going on as far as bands heading into Dallas prior to their SXSW appearances.
So probably totally unrelated to that was the event that I attended this evening. Good Records had a couple of in-store performances and it was definitely the place to start your Friday night. The place was packed but you could almost expect that since they had a couple of kegs of beer and munchies as well. The first band was The Happy Bullets. They were a lot of fun to watch. Everyone was into their performance, even the kids (literally) that were hanging out at the front of the stage. (Only in TX can you have two kegs of beer in a record store and a bunch of little kids running around amidst beer drinking patrons and no one seems to think anything of it.) At some point one of the kids picked up one of the tambourines and just played along with the band. And actually was pretty good. The second band was Raleigh and it was actually their cd release party that everyone was there for. Their female vocalist totally has one of those Janis Joplin-whiskey-soaked voices. I didn’t stick around for the entire performance because it was really hot in there and I was pretty tired so I cut out early. But that was seriously a fun time.
I’ll be headed back on Monday, as Goldenboy, who hail from So-Cal, will be out doing an appearance. Full report from that show on Monday. In the meantime, have a tune in the listen section, courtesy of our buddies at their label, Eenie Meenie.

Daily WTF
So first it was my beloved hardcore punks Rise Against touring with MCR. And now, just in....the second leg of The Black Parade tour will be with Muse. MUSE! WTF?
(I had a moment where I almost rearranged some travel plans thinking I could catch a stop in TX. But then I snapped out of it.)
