Soundtrack to your life
One of the best movies I have seen recently was Garden State. (Coming soon on DVD...December 28th to be exact, the day before my birthday.) If you’ve seen it, you know why. If you haven’t seen it, go troll the quotes and I think you’ll get it. I bought the soundtrack and have been meaning to review it, so here goes.
There are a lot of good artists on this soundtrack. The roster includes Coldplay, The Shins, Zero 7, Nick Drake, Thievery Corporation, Iron and Wine, and Frou Frou. If you’re local, and listen to Midori on Big Sonic Chill, you know these bands. The soundtrack is a good way to be exposed to a bunch of bands you may not hear about otherwise.
Highlights:
Zero 7 "In The Waiting Line" - when I saw them play at 4th and B, this was one of the best songs they did. Very sultry kind of a song.
Nick Drake "One Of These Things First" - the kind of song you want your boyfriend to sing for you when you're having a romantic moment.
Iron and Wine "Such Great Heights" - this is a cover of the Postal Service song. Stripped down and exquisite.
Oh, and there's a song from Colin Hay from Men at Work that is actually pretty good. Never thought I'd say "pretty good" and "Men at Work" in the same sentence. Tee Hee.

Food Police, stay away
I am so glad I weighed in yesterday (down .2, still going in the right direction.) I just had three pieces of Papa John’s pizza for lunch. It was soooo good. All 21 points of it. (Food Police be damned.) Excuse me while I go lay down from food coma.
It’s About The Music
Today is the 2nd Anniversary of FM 94/9. Before this station came into being, I had lost all hope of ever tuning into radio for music. Once upon a time, there was actually good radio in this town. Bad radio owned by the devil was not always the norm. At some point, I just gave up and started listening to sports talk radio. But this radio station has restored my faith in FM radio. And the main reason this station works is the people that run the station. Garett and Halloran love what they do. And they love music. If you listen to either one of them for a few minutes, you know that this is in their blood. It’s what they live for. I have met some great people through this station, not just other listeners, but Garett and Halloran themselves, and, of course, the DJ’s. And we’re all bound together by the music that we love and our need to see it live and the fact that we care that the airwaves are not polluted by stations that play crap.
So cheers to FM 94/9, who has changed the face of alternative radio, not only in San Diego, but in other markets, too. Here’s to many more years of success. And congrats on being voted Best Radio Station from the readers of San Diego City Beat. You know you had my vote. Oh, and even more congrats for kicking that other station’s ass in the summer book. You guys rule.
Do you believe in a thing called love?
Yesterday, the DVD for Before Sunset came out. This movie is the sequel to Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise. So I picked it up and watched it last night. When I went to see the movie in the theatre, I had written a post about the movie and didn’t end up publishing it because I thought I would sound like some lovesick girl. Well, maybe I am a lovesick girl. So here is a good part of what I wrote when I saw it the first time…..
When I was leaving the movie, I was walking behind an older couple who were complaining about the ending and what they didn’t like about the movie. I don’t know anything about this couple except they bitched about a movie that was totally engaging and romantic. They didn’t get it. I thought the movie was great. The chemistry between Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy is totally believable. Jesse and Celine had 9 years to think about the most perfect day of their life and now they were facing what they were going to do now that they were breathing in the same space. And they did what any hopeless romantic would want them to do; they figured out that all these years they both always went back to that moment in time.
Now, I don’t have one of those moments in time. And I’ve had some pretty intense relationships. But I can’t pick one day in my life to be “hands down the best day I can ever remember” (Thank you, Chris Carraba for writing the most perfect song in the past few years.) And I totally vacillate between wanting to have one of those perfect days to really know what it’s like to be in love and not really wanting anything out of my relationships but engaging conversation and someone to sleep with.
Much has been said about my harem of boys (you have to keep a scorecard to keep them straight). And it is true that I could go on a date with a different guy five days a week. (Come on, I’d have to save one night for Girls Night Out and one night for laundry.) But is that what I want? It’s such a hard question to answer. Sometimes I think I keep the harem around to avoid the disappointment of failing at being a girlfriend.
I know that it was just a movie, but this is what a good movie is all about. By the end of the movie, you know these characters like yourself. And you want to be Celine dancing to Nina Simone while Jesse watches her.
And all of that still holds true the second time around. But I really do want to have one of those perfect days. And I have a feeling I know who I want to have one of those perfect days with. Tonight, I should be hanging with The Guy I Really Like. But there’s a catch. Travis should be there, too. It’s going to be a fun evening.

The Icelandic Muse
Wow, that hour went by fast. Album review is up first.
On Sunday, BSC Heather hooked me up with Bjork’s new album, Medulla. Nice. I have dug Bjork since her days with the Sugarcubes. And this album is pretty amazing. Pretty much all the sounds are organic. Like people making them instead of instruments. The Icelandic Choir and the London Choir sing with her on various tracks. And then Mike Patton (famous for his stint with Faith No More) and Tagaq (intuit throatsinging, thank you very much) back her up on some of the tracks as well.
Highlights: “Oceania”, with the London Choir - the first single
“Vokuro”, with the Icelandic Choir - in icelandic. very cool
“Where Is the Line”, with Mike Patton - the beats were good and the Icelandic Choir soars
“Who Is It”, with Tagaq - reminded me of old Sugarcubes, a good thing
Another solid effort by the Icelandic Muse. Get it for those nights when you are at home by the fire and want your spirit to soar.
Holidays are for blogging
So it’s a holiday. Veteran’s Day. Yes, let’s honor those who keep this great country free. (I am not being sarcastic, my dad was in the Navy for 26 years and I do respect and honor all those who have served and are serving now, even if it is for that damn man who masquerades as our president.)
And normally, I would have the day off, but I volunteered to be the supervisor on duty today so I can take tomorrow off as a comp day and go to Disneyland and California Adventure with Boytoy. Yippee. So I have a bunch of stuff I intend to do today...and not work related. So come back often and see what’s happening.
Start the day right
A meme, found at Christina’s:
all about the spleen, or can’t get enough uvula?
Alex, I’ll take body parts that sound like they are nasty for $200. uvula, definitely
Digging the coke with lime, or coke with vanilla?
vanilla. diet, with vodka. vanilla stoli vodka is even better.
Krullers or old fashioned donuts?
tough. can’t choose one or the other. so, it would be strawberry krullers and chocolate old fashioned.
Light Side of the Force or Dark Side?
Dark side. Darth was the first Goth.
Likely to buy a computer form a big brand name or from a big wholesaler?
lusting for a new iBook.
Multiple tools required for assembly or one Allen key does the whole job?
one does the trick.
Keeping the boxes for your stuff or throw that crap out ASAP?
throw it out except for the shoe boxes. easier to find when they are in the box.
Combo switch/router/firewall all in one box or seperate boxes for each function?
i don't have such a setup yet but it would have to be the combo. cause i am geeky like that.
Girls should wear pink and boys blue or don’t reinforce stupid, outdated color stereotypes?
wear what you want. and if i ever adopt a girl and she likes pink, then i guess it's okay if she wears it with black, like i do.
History Channel or Discovery Channel?
history....it was my major in college and i still dig that stuff.
