Happy Birthday Kira!

 Blow Out The Candles

Kira is fun gal and it’s her 30th birthday today. We started it off right last night, but we’re not done. Oh no. Not even close. Tonight it is round two at the Lamp. We’re going to get there before 9pm. She says she’s going to be mellow tonight. I’m saying the line for drinks tonight is about 10. Who’s taking the points? The over/under? Whoever wins gets a shot of their choice the next time I happen to be drinking with you.

I am warning you that I don’t think I will stay for the train wreck. I really want to go to AC tonight, I need to do research on those Cherry Garcia shots. So, Lamp around 9, get in a couple of drinks and then onto AC at around 11.

The social coordinator has spoken. Make it so.

Give me Advil or give me Death

 Social Butterfly

I so need some Advil. My head hurts. But at least I have a shiny new pink leather studded cock ring/bracelet. We’ll get to that in a minute.

The short version: Lots of fun at Lamp. Strawberry Cosmos, Washington Apples, and a shot of Jagermeister to end the night. Lots of cool people (Joelle, Z, Rhiannon, JD, Galvin, Ali, Jon the boytoy, Kira, Christiane, Russ, and Tattoo Dude and his posse). Stayed there until just about last call and then Jon and I went to F Street.

rawk on »

The long version: We took over the two back booths last night. Jon bailed his friends in PB to hang out. I am so glad he's not the kind of guy that needs to be entertained when he doesn't know anyone. He totally held his own the whole night. I got a bunch of crap outside when I was talking to the smoking crowd for PDA with Jon. I love the way the hair on his head feels, it's really closely shaven and I have a habit of rubbing his head when we are sitting together.

But anyways, we had a bunch of Washington Apples to celebrate Kira's bday and then Tattoo Dude showed up. So I had to go back and forth between Boytoy and Tattoo Dude. Yeah. But that was totally cool.

And I got to talk to Russ. I had emailed him earlier this week when I checked out the updates on his website to tell him how I dug the new songs. And then I had to ask him something about one of the pictures that is posted. There is a picture of him with a mirror in the background and you can see a bunch of pictures posted on it. And I thought I saw this really cool picture of us from last year. So I asked him if it was us and he told me yes. That is so cool. I have it up on my desk. So we had a total bonding moment in all the madness and it was very nice.

But enough of the sentimental crap, what you really want to know is, "What happened at F Street?" (For those of you who don't know, F Street is a chain of "adult" gifts and what have you. Read: Porn and Whips and Chains and Dildos and Vibrators and all sorts of fun stuff).

I wanted a new cock ring/bracelet because I don't have one right now (another story which I don't really want to get into here.) So I didn't want to go by myself and Boytoy said he'd come with. So he starts checking out the toys and I went straight to the leather bondage section. And found the most perfect pink leather studded two snap cock ring. So I go to pay for it and Jon has now moved onto the Porn DVD's. And he was all over the Paris Hilton DVD. So he got that. And then I drove him to his car and I went home.

By myself.

Really. smirk

Later Gator

 Social Butterfly

Zach is going to a movie premiere tonight at Hillcrest Cinemas. And while I declined the invite to go to the movie (the gym calls), I am down to go out tonight.  I haven’t seen Zach in forever. I guess that’s what happens when you move in with your girlfriend, you get engaged and start planning a wedding.

So, let’s just say around 10ish. At Lamp, of course. Let the RSVP’s commence.

P.S. It’s Kira’s birthday at midnight. I think a round of Red-Headed Sluts may be in order.

My japanese name is 原 Hara (wilderness) 歩 Ayumi (walk, deeper meaning: walk your own way).

Kick Out the Old Dudes

 Rawk Shows

I think my ears are still ringing from last night. What a great show. The Dragons opened up with a raucous set of real rawk and roll. If you’ve ever get a chance to see them (they’re local, you have no excuse), do not pass go, do not collect $200, just go. Mario Escovedo has a total rock and roll pedigree - I think Sheila E. is his cousin or sister or something. And one of their guitarists was weilding a flying v guitar while smoking a cigarette. He reminded me of Slash of G-n-R. They played a really strong set - my favorite song was “3 Steps to the Bar”. I think most of us can relate.

On to MC5. These guys are old. I'm talking like older than your parents old. But they surprised me because they can still rawk like 20 year olds. Mark Arm from Mudhoney did most of the vocals. He was *so* good. And then there was Evan Dando. You know, the Lemonheads. "Into Your Arms". Mellow, sensitive Evan Dando. Not with MC5. He actually rawked out, too (while smoking, I don't get that.) The only thing that I thought was comedy was this 60 year old guy asking the crowd to "Kick Out the Jams Motherfucker!". It was just wrong.

Oh, the crowd was great. And we saw Troy Johnson from SD City Beat, Tim Pyles from that other station, and Halloran, of course. Who, like us, was looking at his watch at around 1am, thinking it was time to cut it. There was one chick that I have to mention. She was wearing a black Detroit t-shirt and was *so* into it. Will joked that she must have been cheering her dad on.

Good times.

Riveting Radio

 Rawking

Dude, I told you Halloran plays my requests. I emailed him because I wanted to hear “Kick Out the Jams” and he just played it for the Dog Dare. Tonight, I am going to the Casbah with Will from BSC to see MC5 and the Dragons. I got free tix from FM 94/9, which is good since the show is sold out.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that I love this station and the people that work there. They love music and love what they do and it makes for good radio. (As opposed to bad Clear Channel radio.) I never miss Halloran’s show (weekdays 2-6pm and Sundays 7-8pm) because you never know who he will have in studio or interview on the phone. For all of you Cure fans, go check out his interview with Robert Smith… it was great.

And have a fabulous day!

ugh, I agree about Pandora. Major suck. Sometimes I’ll listen to Last FM if I’m in the mood for a certain style or genre. They do an okay job, though not super awesome.

roger:

How did that translate into the rest of the day?

Cristy Westfall:

Dear Chick Rawker,
Thank you for taking our survey.  The purpose of these surveys are two-fold.....to find out what ALL listeners think about the music we play, along with songs that we think listeners might be interested in hearing on our station.  The songs on the list below are not necessarily in rotation on our radio station.  We have a lot of fun here and sometimes we have specialty weekends and features that songs on this list might or might not fit into.  I hope that you continue to take our surveys and give us your opinion because it helps us program our station to give listeners what they want.

Yes alternative music crosses over to the pop world, it always has and always will.  I think it’s great when an artist or group reaches this level.  They release there music and are labeled “Alternative” and then they become “Popular” and the masses want to hear them.  If managed correctly this will allow them to create and be more artistic with their music in the future.  For example NIN....yes “Closer” is a “Popular” song, but without it, would Trent Reznor have been able to create and work on the many projects he has that appeal to a “Music Connoisseur” like yourself?  We don’t know for sure but we can guess the answer is “Yes.”

There is a purpose and place for POP Music.  I hope that from now on you take this into consideration when you listen to and judge the formats that this type of music is featured on.

Thank you,
Cristy Westfall

@karmiclife:

These are the same things I have been thinking about for awhile now, starting when Chris left. Radio is still relevant and will be for a while. The other competition aside from online is satalitte radio. Many people listen through Sirius and XFM. It is all splintered. Partnerships, collaboration, engaging with fans are the way to go and survive. Hard core music fans like most of our crowd may end up left to scrounge for the good stuff. But really, is that so new?

[go]

hilary:

so sweet, lyn.

roger:

Word. I’d have to use different examples, but would say everything else exactly the same.
