Annuals and Manchester Orchestra at Epicentre

 Rawk Shows

Annuals and Manchester Orchestra just killed it last night. I got there a little after 8 (after hitting Tio Leos for some Pacifico) and Annuals had just started so I went right up to the front for some quick action shots....

Anna of the Annuals

Now that I have seen the Arcade Fire, I can say that the comparisons between Annuals and Arcade Fire are not unfounded. There’s so much going on it’s hard to keep track. I’m guilty of usually just focusing on the lead singer when I am at shows, but you can’t do that with the Annuals. Adam is all over the place, playing keys or guitar or various forms of percussion. Anna is hard to not stare at (though its hard to catch her without her hair in her face.) Mike, the bass player, is super expressive - it’s fun to see what he’s up to at any given time. And they are all so young - I just want to pinch Zach’s cheeks. Haha. Okay, so set list and then more photos and commentary....

Adam and Anna of the Annuals

At some point, Anna went over to Adam and was trying to tell him something...I thought that was a good moment to capture. As was Manchester Orchestra coming on stage for “Brother”. It was cool to have everyone on stage and just having a great time up there.

Adam of the Annuals and Andy of Manchester Orchestra

I moved to the back for the Manchester Orchestra set. Mostly because I didn’t want to take photos and just wanted to enjoy their full set. (I didn’t even take notes.) Besides, I was in good company back there (Tim and Owen from KBZT were there as was Dialed in Rosey and Sunny Natalie.) It’s hard to describe what Manchester Orchestra sounds like....they’ve got some of that loud-soft-loud going but their tour de force is definitely Andy’s vocals and the emotion he puts into them. Like for a song like “Golden Ticket” where the music is super quiet while he is singing and then there’s a sudden burst of energy when the band joins in. You just don’t know what hit you as you’re taking it in. When the Annuals (minus Anna) came out during “Where Have You Been”, it was pretty much the best organized chaos you would ever want to see on stage. For their last song, everyone besides Andy left the stage. Andy sang a song by himself and was completely so raw it was almost uncomfortable. He just put himself out there and it was completely amazing.

Okay, in case you missed these earlier, grab the tunes, you won’t regret it. And make sure you see these bands the next time they roll into town. You’ll be won over, I promise.

That last sentence is the kicker. Let’s see more of that!

Christy:

ugh, I agree about Pandora. Major suck. Sometimes I’ll listen to Last FM if I’m in the mood for a certain style or genre. They do an okay job, though not super awesome.

roger:

How did that translate into the rest of the day?

Cristy Westfall:

Dear Chick Rawker,
Thank you for taking our survey.  The purpose of these surveys are two-fold.....to find out what ALL listeners think about the music we play, along with songs that we think listeners might be interested in hearing on our station.  The songs on the list below are not necessarily in rotation on our radio station.  We have a lot of fun here and sometimes we have specialty weekends and features that songs on this list might or might not fit into.  I hope that you continue to take our surveys and give us your opinion because it helps us program our station to give listeners what they want.

Yes alternative music crosses over to the pop world, it always has and always will.  I think it’s great when an artist or group reaches this level.  They release there music and are labeled “Alternative” and then they become “Popular” and the masses want to hear them.  If managed correctly this will allow them to create and be more artistic with their music in the future.  For example NIN....yes “Closer” is a “Popular” song, but without it, would Trent Reznor have been able to create and work on the many projects he has that appeal to a “Music Connoisseur” like yourself?  We don’t know for sure but we can guess the answer is “Yes.”

There is a purpose and place for POP Music.  I hope that from now on you take this into consideration when you listen to and judge the formats that this type of music is featured on.

Thank you,
Cristy Westfall

@karmiclife:

These are the same things I have been thinking about for awhile now, starting when Chris left. Radio is still relevant and will be for a while. The other competition aside from online is satalitte radio. Many people listen through Sirius and XFM. It is all splintered. Partnerships, collaboration, engaging with fans are the way to go and survive. Hard core music fans like most of our crowd may end up left to scrounge for the good stuff. But really, is that so new?

hilary:

so sweet, lyn.

roger:

Word. I’d have to use different examples, but would say everything else exactly the same.
