Asylum Street Spankers @ Casbah
A show is always a good way to end the weekend, especially if it is one that is chillax and fun at the same time. (True story - chillax at Casbah to a new level - there were actual chairs on the entire floor.)
So while I was at SXSW, I got turned on to an awesome band called Asylum Street Spankers. Not usually what I would listen to but definitely the kind of band I would go see.
But first things first. The opener was Cheap Leis.
Um, who knew that O could wear anything but a black tee and hoodie. Plus play some weird ukelele type instrument?
I walked in and they were singing a song that had some tagalog in it...."Dahil Sayo” (because of you) - a total torchy filipino ballad type thing. Awesome. Even more awesome? Their take on New Order’s “Bizzare Love Triangle”.
Alright, so the Spankers. To understand the Spankers, you must meet Wammo.
He kinda reminds me of Dex in the Tao of Steve (Donal Logue). But yeah, he drives the whole show and always has a Heineken in his hand unless he’s playing this....
So the whole show is kinda free-wheeling and fun, with constant changes as far as who is singing. It’s a good time.
As I am sitting here in McCarran airport (LAS), I’ve got “My baby’s in the C.I.A.” and “beer, beer, beer, beer....we love beer” stuck in my head. Not a bad thing.
But I am way too scatterbrained to write anything else.
Peep all the photos here.
