So I think this is the fourth time I’ve seen Coheed. And the best yet. Mostly because I’ve seen them at SOMA and at Warped Tour, which isn’t very conducive to seeing a show especially if you are short. (Though that first show at SOMA in the mosh pit with he who shall not be named was pretty intense, I still couldn’t see squat.) The venue at Viejas is perfect for a loud rock show - the acoustics were great. For the first three songs where I was allowed to take photos, I just took as many possible (put my camera in sports mode to take a ton of shots) - really I was trying to get photos of Claudio without his hair in his face, with mixed results. After the the third song, I just enjoyed the show - it was great that the fourth song was “A Favor House Atlantic” and then the next was “Suffering”. I was pretty close to the stage and everyone around me was singing along and just generally rocking out. “Blood Red Summer” was intense - it was another song that everyone knew and was into. After “In Keeping Secrets”, I headed to the back of the venue by the sound booth and was amazed that I could still see everything. The sight lines are awesome. I stayed for the super long encore (10 minute drum solo, hello) because I was actually still enjoying myself. (Okay, I was really just hoping to get the set list, which I did. Score.)
Update: When I was at the show, I ran into a couple of the guys from SDPunk who were also covering the show. One of the guys, Dan, was keeping a set list on a piece of paper (so old school!) so I gave him my blog card since I had no idea at that point that I would score the official list. He emailed me yesterday and sent me some notes. The “Evil Medley” was actually three songs: “The Trooper” (Iron Maiden cover), “Devil In Jersey City” and “Everything Evil”. Thanks, Dan!
