Friday Evening at The Met
If you’re ever in NY on a weekend, you must make a trip to the Met on either Friday or Saturday evening. These are the only days that the Balcony Bar is open and it is a must-do on my list of “cool things to experience at a museum”.
So when you get to the Met, there is a suggested donation of $20, but they’ll take anything. Now normally, I would pay my $20 and be done with it, but I knew I wasn’t there to see the art. I was there to have a drink or two and maybe catch some dinner, so I didn’t pony up the $20. I almost was guilted into paying it, but the lady in front of me handed the cashier 20 cents so I was feeling okay that I only ponied up a dollar.
Okay, so the Balcony Bar overlooks the entrance. It’s a great view. Our waiter asked us what we wanted to drink – “martinis?” I ordered a Brooklyn Pilsner and he was surprised at that. I guess I kinda looked at him funny and actually told him “do you think we’re those lame SATC tourists that come to NY to drink martinis or something?” He backtracked and said that he thought we were “hoity toity girls from the Upper West Side getting our martini on.” Dig yourself in deeper much, dude? But yeah, we talked to him for a bit and he ended up being nice enough so whatever.
Next stop was the Rooftop Café where the drinks are accompanied by great views of the city. It was really busy up there, so I took these photos and then we went back down through the Petrie Sculpture Court.
We ended up having dinner in the Petrie Court Café. I just ordered a couple of appetizers off the list instead of a meal. My first appetizer was a gorgonzola flan with roasted figs and proscuitto. Wow. That was just really good. And then I had a Maine lobster salad. It was arugula with a lobster claw and a portion of the tail with avocado. Also really good.
After dinner and some shopping (of course!) we got out of there and walked through the neighborhood to get the subway. There were some really cool houses. I am a junkie for all the architecture; I could take pictures of buildings for days.
