Great Northern at Belly Up Tavern
Great Northern has been out on tour for the better part of two months and are back in their home state of California. Even though the band is from L.A., they were greeted with a hometown welcome last night at their show at the Belly Up Tavern, which was sponsored by KBZT’s “About The Music” series. KBZT is playing “Home” in regular rotation and is 5 songs deep into their album “Trading Twilight From Daylight” on their popular specialty show “Big Sonic Chill”. So it’s no wonder that the show was well attended.
The crowd was treated with two well received openers - The Truckee Brothers (a local band) and The Comas, who are from New York. The Comas have been on tour with Great Northern for the past couple of months. Solon and Rachel from Great Northern came out during “Red Microphone” to play percussion and sing along.

When Great Northern came out for their set, the crowd was appreciative early. There were quite a few people taking photos (myself included though I didn’t get one of drummer Jason because he was hiding back there). There was one guy who took about 50 photos of just Ashley. Obsessive much? She did look great though; I guess you can’t blame the guy.
The band played a long set that included all of the songs from their album. (Unofficial set list from my notes if you rawk on.) By the time they played “Home” (which everyone in the crowd knew), they had hit their stride and finished their set strongly with “The Middle” and “Into The Sun”. Andy and Nicole came out of “Into The Sun” and played percussion and sang much like Solon and Rachel did for them earlier. After a short break, the band came back for the encore of “Babies”.
It was a great night to be out at the Belly Up. I’m sure it won’t be the last time that Great Northern will be in San Diego playing to a great crowd that loves them.
P.S. The rest of the photos are here. Rosey has posted video here. And if you are here because you are reading Filter’s Tourzine, hello!
