If it’s Picked, is it Played?
A little twist on Hot Picks this week. The usual rundown of the most picked and a 10 station sampling. Then we’ll take a look at the “Taking Off” charts, which actually will tell us the songs in the top 50 that have had the most new spins. Geeky, I know.
Most Picked:
Radiohead - Bodysnatchers (KFMA, KRBZ, KROQ, Sirius -Alt Nation/Left Of Center, Waitt Radio Networks, WSFM, WWCD)
The Bravery - Believe (KERX, KFMA, KRAB, KXRK, WEBX, WRRV)
Sick Puppies - My World (KCXX, KWOD, WEBX, WHRL, WXEG)
Say Anything - Baby Girl, I’m A Blur (KTCL, KWOD, WFNX, WHTG, WRRV)
Spill Canvas - All Over You (KDGE, WHTG, WPBZ, WRRV)
No surprise that the alt rock world is all over new Radiohead. No brainer. I think it’s funny that stations are still trying to make us listen to the Bravery. They are utterly forgettable in my book. No comment on the Sick Puppies. Say Anything is a yay and so is the Spill Canvas.
KCCQ/Des Moines, IA - Ryan Wild - (PD)
Coheed And Cambria - The Running Free
Motion City Soundtrack - This Is For Real
VHS Or Beta - Can’t Believe A Single Word
I like all three of these - a little nu-prog with Coheed and the tried and true catchy pop hooks of MCS and VHS or Beta.
KDGE/Dallas, TX - Chris Ryan (APD/MD)
Dropping Daylight - Apologies
Fair To Midland - Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes
Spill Canvas - All Over You
KDGE is going to keep playin the Fair to Midland since they are from TX.
KRBZ/Kansas City, MO - Jason Ulanet (APD/MD)
Brand New - Forks & Knives
Carbon/silicon - The News
Radiohead - Bodysnatchers
You know I love me some Brand New. KC loves them - they sold out the Uptown Theatre when I was there last week.
KROQ/Los Angeles, CA - Gene Sandbloom (OM)
Band Of Horses - Is There A Ghost
Radiohead - Bodysnatchers
Spoon - Don’t You Evah
It’s rare to get a contribution from KROQ since they have bigger fish to fry. But what’s up with feigning indie love?
KVGS/Las Vegas, NV - Duncan Payton (PD)
Fall Out Boy - I’m Like A Lawyer With The Way I’m Always Trying To Get You Off
Foo Fighters - The Long Road To Ruin
Linkin Park - Shadow Of The Day
I actually like that FOB song. It was one of my faves from the album. Mostly because it’s got a great bridge and sing-a-long chorus..
We’re the new face of failure
Prettier and younger but not any better off
Bulletproof loneliness
At best, at best
Me and you
Setting in a honeymoon
If I woke up next to you
Sirius -Alt Nation/Left Of Center - Rich McLaughlin (PD)
The Hives - Tick Tick Boom
The Killers - Shadowplay
Radiohead - Bodysnatchers
I would be cool with these if the Killers weren’t on there.
WEQX/Albany, NY - Amber Miller (MD)
Mobile - Out Of My Head
Oasis - Lord Don’t Slow Me Down
Ween - Shamemaker
I’ve never gotten into Ween...I can’t imagine this would sound good on the radio, but the pick is inspired.
WHTG/Monmouth-Ocean, NJ - Matt Murray (MD)
Paramore - Crushcrushcrush
Say Anything - Baby Girl, I’m A Blur
Spill Canvas - All Over You
Hells ya. The tween girl in me is loving this.
WNNX/Atlanta, GA - Elliott Garstin (Programming Asst.)
Black Lips - Venie Vidie Vici (Diplo Remix)
Soulsavers - Revival
Ween - Your Party
I need to hear Black Lips on my radio.
XTRA-F/San Diego, CA - Capone (MD)
Angels And Airwaves - Siren
Brand New - Forks & Knives
Dropping Daylight - Apologies
The new AVA is just unspeakably bad. But I still gotta get my Brand New love in.
Ok, so those were the picks. How did that really translate to spins? Out of the top 10 of the Taking off chart, here’s how some picks fared:
Foo Fighters - Long Road To Ruin
3 new stations 34 new spins
Leaders: KVGS - Vegas, KQXR - Boise, KITS - SF, KROQ - LA, KJEE- Santa Barbara
Say Anything - Baby Girl, I’m A Blur
3 new stations 26 new spins
Leaders: WEXQ - Albany, KXRK - Salt Lake City, KRBZ - Kansas City, WBRU - Providence, KTCL - Denver
Oasis - Lord Don’t Slow Me Down
1 new station 19 new spins
Starters: WEXQ - Albany, KNDD - Seattle
Coheed and Cambria - The Running Free
2 new stations 21 new spins
Leaders: Sirius, XM, KCCQ - Des Moines, KRAB - Bakersfield, KRZQ - Reno
Radiohead - Bodysnatchers
1 new stations 19 new spins
Leaders: Sirius, WWCD - Columbus, KRBZ - Kansas City, KROQ - LA, KNRK - PDX
So there’s definitely a correlation between what’s picked and what’s played. But not enough. When I see picks, I want instant radio gratification. Which just doesn’t happen in the complicated world of commercial radio programming. Sigh. Enough geekiness for today. I may post some of these songs later but I have a ton of stuff to do today...off from work and getting ready for Halloween by baking....
