Jimmy Eat World at HOB San Diego
Nothing like ending a long week with a good show. Especially if it happens to be a band that you happen to listen to a lot. I’ve been playing the new album “Chase This Light” all week so I was all geeked up for tonight. Set list first....

First off, the crowd was great. There were a lot of old school fans in there....how could you tell they were old school? When they sang every single lyric to songs off “Clarity”. There was actually a lot of singing along. The only time I’ve seen them before tonight was at Cox Arena and that venue is just not conducive for the kind of fandom I was experiencing. So I felt right at home amongst a bunch of people singing at the top of their lungs like I was.
So starting off with “Big Casino”, the new single was genius. And everyone sang along like it was a song they’ve known and loved for years. The segue into “A Praise Chorus” was perfect. I had read on Amateur Chemist that Davey from Maritime came out on stage during this song in L.A. and we were treated to the same here. (The lyric “Come on Davey Sing me something that I know” refers to him.) So needless to say, the crowd was pretty pumped up. But they just kept coming at us. “Blister” from “Clarity” was a crowd favorite....lyrics moment....
How long would it take me
to walk across the United States all alone.
The West coast has been traumatized.
I think I’m the only one still alive.
And then from there going into “Lucky Denver Mint”? Perfect. But it wasn’t just the old faves that sounded great. Besides “Big Casino” being a great song live, “Carry You” and “Let It Happen” are sure to be new crowd faves. And who wouldn’t be stoked to get “Bleed American” and “Pain” back to back? After a short intermission, they came back out and did a different acoustic arrangement of “Your House”, an achingly beautiful “Hear You Me”, and “Polaris”. But they couldn’t leave us on such a downer. “Sweetness” is just joyous live. And “The Middle” had the crowd singing and jumping up and down. A good time had by all, I’m sure.
