Mates of State at HOB SD
I was pretty geeked up for Mates of States after LVD’s strong performance. (There was an artist between them - Alice Smith who I will describe as an Alicia Keys type of performer except she’s an alto and she doesn’t play piano - she had some guy play guitar while she sang. But I digress...)
The last time I saw Kori and Jason was in Dallas and I had a totally different perspective as I was way further back on the floor. But I got up close and personal this time and that was cool. I guess my buzz wore off by then because even though I was taking photos, I was able to keep a set list....

The set list wasn’t really surprising - mostly material from their last two albums. The one exception was “Everyone Needs An Editor” from their debut album (released in 2000!) Someone requested the song and Kori decided they would do it, even though Jason wasn’t so sure he remembered how to play it. They totally rocked it...so much so they blew out the P.A. near the end of the song so we couldn’t hear them sing. After the song, the sound guys worked on getting the P.A. back up and their touring guitarist and cellist came out. I didn’t catch the guy’s name but I think the cellist’s name was Carla. She was cool because she teased a bit of Santogold’s “L.E.S. Artistes” while we were waiting. Once the sound was fixed, they finished with two from the latest album, including my favorite “The Re-Arranger”. At some point, Carla came over and started playing they keys with Kori. They looked like they were having a good time.

So after Mates of State were done, I debated on whether or not to stay for Santogold. I bailed because the crowd was rowdy, young, and pretty much lame. Which is fine because I need some sleep....heading to Vegas tomorrow to catch the opening show of the Kings of Leon tour. And yes, I’ll be back on Sunday to catch them here too. My life is pretty rad sometimes.
