Mates of State at the Granada Dallas
I haven’t been to a show in Dallas in forever. I was glad when I checked the calendar and saw that Mates of State would be playing while I was here. I am really digging their new album and was excited to see the new material live as I hadn’t seen the duo since saw them at Cox Arena when they opened for Taking Back Sunday and Jimmy Eat World.
I did get there early enough to catch the openers...not much to say about the first band, but the second one - Black Joe Lewis was freaking off the hook. They’re from Austin and those boys have the soul-funk that is missing in R&B - especially radio. But I digress....
So Kory and Jason come out on stage and start right into “Now” from Re-Arrange Us. I figured the set would be heavy on new stuff and it was but they played a ton of old stuff too. I kept notes (the balcony wasn’t open so I couldn’t get up to my prized spot at the sound booth to get the official list, but I am pretty sure it is right because I cross checked it with some other current setlists and I was spot on).

The Re-Arranger
The big change was that they had a string section (Lewis and Anton Patzner of Judgement Day) for some songs. Kinda weird to not just be Kory and Jason. But it really did add to the show, so all good. The crowd was sufficiently enthused all night and despite some douchebaggery, I had a pretty good time. I am glad I held out until the encore because I freaking *love* “The Re-Arranger”.
That is all. This week with the TX boys is taking its toll, nighty night for me.
