An Epic MMJ Show
So. My Morning Jacket at HOB. If you were listening to it on the radio, you know it was an epic one. From the opening strains of “It Beats For You”, you knew it was going to be a special night. They segued right into “Gideon” and then “What A Wonderful Man”. A trio of really strong songs to start their set.
As an aside, I must talk about Jim James. He’s quite a sight to behold and I don’t mean that in a bad way. He is totally my favorite kind of Southern man. You know, a little burly. He was dressed in black with these weird sort of snow boots or something. Wild hair, beard. That’s what I am talking about. A guy that actually eats a sammich every once in awhile. Maybe even two!
Jim James had a great time talking to the crowd. He kept calling us “picture-esque”. And then he was reminiscing about past shows here. He said that his favorite was at The Scene. There were like 10 people there and to make friends with the crowd, the band made peanut butter and jelly sammiches for them. Nice. So between “Wordless Chorus” and “Off The Record”, the band busted out the bread (whole wheat even!) and the PB & J and made sammiches for the crowd. Very, very cool. Later, Jim James was swinging the rest of the loaf of bread as he sang “Steam Engine”. Classic. Two hours of pure show heaven.
Sometime during the night, I bought the official show poster. I had seen it in the restaurant on my bday so I was glad they actually sold it. But it smells like moth balls and I think it actually started to make me feel sick by the end of the night, so I skipped going to Lamp. Oh well. Tommy and I can have a celebratory shot the next time I see him.
P.S. Yes, yes, that’s a bonus in the listen section. The live version, of course.
P.P.S. You can stream the show on 94/9’s site. Rawk on to see the set list.
