My Morning Jacket at SDSU Open Air Theatre

EPIC. I could just stop at that but I feel obligated to be super descriptive about tonight’s show since someone who is across the world in Oz (tough life, huh?) missed out.
So yeah, my seat (DDD row 5 seat 5) was awesome (not like I sat in it once the show started) so I had a close view to the epic unfolding. They started off with two from Evil Urges - “I’m Amazed” and “Touch Me I Am Going to Scream Part 1.” Then it was “Off the Record” from Z. Very nice. We were nice and warmed up by then and they kept coming at us - “Aluminum Park”, “It Beats For You” (from It Still Moves where I am guessing they picked up most of their fans in SD, myself included).
Then I had my first moment that took my breath away when I heard the first notes for “Thank You Too”. These lyrics really resonated with me from the moment I heard the song after SXSW: put on my robot face/had my emotions way far away from me/ohhh you really saw my naked heart/you really brought out the naked part/I don’t know what you were doing/I know I just want to thank you for thinking of me/I want to take you for all that you are/I know our worlds seem far apart. Sigh. At that point I really got into the show and stopped trying to keep a set list for a bit. But then we got “Gideon” and it just kept getting better with “Look at You”, “Evil Urges” and the other epic song from Evil Urges - “Smokin From Shootin” (more lyrics....Do you live your life on the road?/Yeah loosing that I’m loving/Asking for nothing /Runnin’ from something that isn’t there).
A little side note - Jim James wasn’t very talkative tonight but when he was, he was all over the place. And now I am forgetting what he talked about except for he went on a tangent about Balboa Park and the 1915 Exposition that it was built for. I was also digging the coat that he used as a cape - being so close you can see how animated his expressions were - those were a show in itself.
Ending the main set with “TMIGTSP2” and then the fan favorite “Magheetah” just left all of us wanting for more. The encore did not disappoint. Well at least 4 out of 5 didn’t, I still hate “Highly Suspicious”. But we got “Golden”, “Wordless Chorus”, “Anytime” and “One Big Holiday”.
After the show ended, I hung out trying to get a set list, but no luck. And then I tried to take a photo of one that someone had but I still can’t figure out how to work my camera phone. Grrrr. But hopefully I will get an email of the set list (gotta love flickr moo cards for getting info out).
Oh and the poster above is the official poster. I got one the last time I saw them too. Guess it will be a tradition for now on.
Gah, this isn’t a very good post. I’m kinda scattered. I should’ve just left it at EPIC.
P.S. Full setlist if you rawk on. Found the MMJ setlist archive. Awesome.
