Release Spotlight: Kings of Leon
Artist: Kings of Leon
Album: Only By The Night
Recommended if you like: southern rock
From the press kit:
The early reviews for Only By The Night have been stellar. Vanity Fair hails the new record as “a big leap forward and genuinely ups the ante,” while Spin, in its four-star review, says that the band “still rule with a messy hand, applying rough magic and blurry, slurred imagery to their swashbuckling rock.” In the UK, Uncutmagazine gives the record “Album of the Month” honors and exclaims, “the Kings of Leon aren’t impersonating the greats, they’re competing with them on an increasingly level playing field.” The Observer Music Monthly, in its glowing, five-out-of-five-star review, salutes the new record as it “boogies, choogles and howls at the moon—no irony intended, no guilt entertained.”
Standout Tracks: “Use Somebody","I Want You”
Worth a second listen?:
I really don’t get why KOL haven’t gotten as big stateside as they are in the U.K. Long time readers of this blog know how much I love these guys and each album brings a new appreciation for what they do. Okay, so it helps that I totally crush on Caleb, especially with his new haircut. But eye candy aside, they just keep giving me reasons to love them. The single “Sex on Fire” is already burning up the radio charts (#1 in the UK, #24 in the US), but if you think this is KOL at their best, you haven’t heard the standout “Use Somebody” or the slow and sexy “I Want You” (kinda reminiscent of “Charmer” from Because of the Times). The more I listen to it, the more I love it. I’m so glad I get to see them back-to-back on this tour - checking them in Vegas at The Joint then coming home for their show at HOB the next day. If you haven’t seen KOL live, grab a ticket to that show while you can because it is sure to sell out.
