SCMX on Saturday - Don’t Miss List
It’s not too early to be thinking about the weekend. I, for one, know exactly how I’ll be spending my Saturday. Yep, I’ll be downtown at SCMX. Here’s my little guide for the lineup.
3.00-3.45 (Main Stage): Delta Spirit
If you live in SD and haven’t caught this band, then you’re living under a rock. I’ve seen them quite a few times, but whenever I’ve seen them in TX, the crowd seems to appreciate them more. So show them some So-Cal love and when they make more national noise, you can say you saw them when.
4.15-5.15 (Main Stage): Galactic
This band and I go way back. The first time I saw them was at the HOB in NOLA in 1997. They had just released their first album and were causing quite a stir in the Crescent City. They played out here quite a bit back in the day. You old schoolers may remember seeing them at the Green Circle on 9th & F. They were buds with the owner Gary who hails from NOLA. (Gary is who owns AC now.) Their sound has evolved through the years, but you can count on them to bring some funk to the show.
Listen:
Galactic - Bounce Baby
Galactic - No Way
5.45-6.45 (Main Stage): Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
I love me some BRMC. Their shows are always a good mix of old and new material. They now have 4 strong albums for their sets - from their guitar fuzz of the early days (stuff like crowd faves “Whatever Happened to My Rock and Roll Punk Song” and “Red Eyes and Tears") to their folk/blues inspired new material (like “Promise” or “Ain’t No Easy Way").
Listen:
BRMC - Whatever Happened to My Rock and Roll Punk Song
BRMC - Stop
BRMC - Promise
BRMC - 666 Conducer
8.45-9.15 (Local Stage): Scarlet Symphony
I say this every time I see this band live - Gary is an amazing frontman. Whatever you want to call it, he’s got it. The rest of the band aren’t slouches either, so this is great way to get yourself psyched up for the main event.
9.15-10.30 (Main Stage): The Flaming Lips
You have no idea what you’re missing if you’ve never seen them live. I saw them at Parking Lot Scene a couple of years ago when Wayne came out into the crowd in his plastic bubble and that was amazing even though I was no where near what was going on. The second time I saw them was at the Open Air in the second row. I was so blown away by how good they were. And being right there meant that I didn’t miss out on anything (including confetti for days....) I’m sure that they won’t let us down on Saturday - they love San Diego.
Listen:
The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize?
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
The Flaming Lips - War Pigs
