SXSW 2008: Day Three Part 1
Taking a quick break before I head back out into the madness. This is how my day has gone thus far.
High Noon: Bad Veins @ Hot Freaks (Mohawk)
It was oppressively hot at noon, but since I was there early, I found a bit of shade to enjoy this quirky cool duo from Cincy. Their setup was great - a reel to reel for their backing tracks and a cool microphone setup that was set up through an old school phone. Genius. I bought their 7 inch single which came with a cd that looks like a record. Even more genius. Somewhere in their set, I noticed Whitney from PopCandy and said hi. She is super sweet. (Oh and I wouldn’t have known it was her without her badge. I guess they are actually good for finding people that you read or have contact with from the interweb. I also saw Dodge of MOKB, which is still my favorite music blog. I should have said hi, but he was busy recording some of the performances and schmoozing, so no harm no foul.
1pm: The Whigs @ Hot Freaks (Mohawk)
Didn’t have to go far for the next show. “Right Hand on My Heart” is blowing up and these guys are ready for it. Their set was tight.
2.30pm: LoveLikeFire @ SFxSXSW (Bourbon Rocks)
I’ve been trying to catch these guys from SF all weekend (and before that had them on my radar for shows in KC and at home, but it just never worked out.) They have a big shoegazey feel to them. Not a bad thing. And for a wee Asian girl, Ann Yu has a big voice. Go listen to “From A Tower” on their myspace and buy some tracks from them.
3.00pm: Headed back to the convention center to grab some poster art. I got a Tad Carpenter designed Tegan and Sara poster from when they played the Uptown in KC. You can check it out here. (From looking at his site I see he designed one for the Dashboard/Augustana show that I went to in KC. I’m buying it online.) I also got a small poster from Methane Studios. It’s a small pink bird poster that was done for a Rilo Kiley (with Grand Ole Party and Art in Manila) show in the ATL.
So yeah...I guess I’ve chilled enough for now. Back to the party....
