Tigercity brings it to HOB
Any time that a band lists Prince as an influence, I’m going to give it a listen. If I can actually hear that influence in their songs, I am going to count myself as a fan. There has been some buzz about Tigercity in Rolling Stone and Pop Candy, but I have yet to see Indie Blogger Nation embrace this Brooklyn based band. I don’t know what the hell they are waiting for, especially after seeing them live at HOB tonight, where they were opening for imarobot. The crowd was small as they played early (about 50 people) and it was also an all ages show so I’m sure that factored into the attendance. Bummer for you guys because they were great.
Bill, their lead singer, sings with a falsetto that can be compared to Prince’s in the “Kiss” era. He’s got the dancy moves that make you want to shake along with him.
Joel, who plays bass and also sings, is Bill’s perfect foil. He’s got the cooler than thou bass player pose down to a science. The band is rounded out by Andrew on guitar and Aynsley on drums.
The band played for a little over 30 minutes. The fourth song in was “Other Girls” which was definitely my favorite. I also dug “Are You Sensation” as Joel ditched his bass and sang along with Bill.
After their set, Andrew and Joel came out to talk. (I had met Joel before the show as he took care of getting my photo pass.) Super nice guys. This is their first time out in Cali - they’ve got some good shows lined up (L.A., S.F., Portland and Seattle) and I’m sure they are going to leave a trail of fans along their path. This won’t be the last time you see them in Cali and definitely not the last time I’ll write about them.
Go check them out on myspace.
