Tigercity - what’s not to love?
When I was growing up, I was musically fed on a steady diet of r&b, soul, pop and big bands. None of that rock and roll in my house (though my dad had a best of the Beatles 8 track that I played the shit out of, which he told me later was a gift from someone.) Plus, my family was from SF and we all listened to KMEL back in the day when it ruled the r&b airwaves. So, could you really be surprised to know that the first single I bought was Prince’s “1999”? I know that I am not the only person in my generation to love that kind of music. And I’m glad that someone out there is putting a new spin on it, namely Brooklyn’s Tigercity. Rolling Stone calls it “funky, electro-driven indie-pop”. I just call it good.
Tigercity cites a diverse list of influences - Prince, the Cars, Earth Wind & Fire, Hall & Oates, and Scritti Politti (among others). Listening to their new EP “Pretend Not to Love”, you can definitely hear some of those influences converge into these tunes that alternately make you want to dance or make out with someone (sometimes both). The opening track “Powerstripe” sets the stage for the rest of the tunes. You get the slick beats with Bill’s falsetto and you have an idea of what you’re in for. The rest of the songs all have their own charm. I mean, if I didn’t know better, I would think that “Let Her Go” was a Hall & Oates cover. My favorite is still “Other Girls”, which could be a long lost cousin of “Take Me With U”.
But don’t just take my word for it…
